DISTRICT RECORD CENTRES
The Indian Historical Records Commission, in its 42nd session, had requested the State Government to open maximum number of intermediate Record Centres on a priority basis in the States to collect and preserve the records laying in various field offices of the State Government. Keeping in view of the need to centralize and preserve the records on modern scientific lines, the Government of Tamil Nadu opened Record Centres at Coimbatore, Madurai, Cuddalore, Salem, Tiruchirappalli and Thanjavur. 
DISTRICT RECORD CENTRE, COIMBATORE
The Coimbatore District Record Office started functioning from 11 March 1982. In this Centre, records of administrative and historical importance which are more than 30 years old have been collected from the Government Offices of Coimbatore District belonging to Revenue, Education, Forest, Local Administration, etc., and records numbering 38741 are preserved.

DISTRICT RECORD CENTRE, MADURAI
The Madurai District Record Office started functioning from 25 March 1982. In this Centre, records of historical importance which are more than 30 years old numbering 82587 are preserved.

DISTRICT RECORD CENTRE, CUDDALORE
The Cuddalore District Record Office started functioning from 25 March 1982. In this Centre, all those records of erstwhile South Arcot District Government Officers which are more than 30 years old numbering 1,17,472 and which are of administrative and historical importance are collected and preserved.
